Scoliosis

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a common medical condition affecting 3 million Americans annually. There are several kinds of Scoliosis which result in bending the curve of the spine in an S or C shape. The cause of scoliosis is unknown, although it can be present at birth or develop later in life, as well as being an underlying symptom from another condition such as cerebral palsy, Marfan syndrome, or neurofibromatosis.

Scoliosis can affect both the biomechanical and neurological functions of the body. Symptoms associated with Scoliosis are changes in motor control, loss of proprioception, problems with postural control, nutritional inadequacy, and changes in muscle anatomy like concaved and convex sides. Neurological effects can include abnormal brain EEG, altered neurological reflexes, and cerebral asymmetry.
